da provare! The comparisons provide some basis for judging between a tube amp rated at 5% THD at X-Watts, vs. a solid-state amp rated at .001% THD at Y-Watts. The audio world is inundated with snake oil, and I have been suspicious about the claims regarding the sound from single-ended triode amps at high levels of THD, but I am now a believer.
- My conclusions from my own listening tests are:
- For a given level of total harmonic distortion (THD), a single-ended class A triode amp without feedback sounds a lot better than anything else.
- A push-pull pentode amp without feedback and a solid-state amp are not drastically different.
- If the maximum output power of the single-ended tube amp is less than 1/4 of the power of a solid-state amp, and they are played at equal volume levels, the solid-state amp wins.
- My audibility threshold for clipping occurs at an output level around 5-10% of maximum output power, where roughly 1% of the digital samples are clipped.
